Fire Smokeburst on the Special 22 Semi-Hollow: Three Pickups, Two Chambers, and a Finish That Ignites

Fire Smokeburst is a color that needs no explanation. Fiery red that melts into a dark, smoky edge on a flame maple top: this is a guitar that makes an impression before it has even played a note. The PRS Special 22 Semi-Hollow in this finish combines that look with a tonal palette rarely found in guitars of its class, thanks to three pickups, coil-splitting, and a semi-hollow construction that gives the tone room to breathe.

The two 58/15 LT humbuckers and the PRS Narrowfield in the middle form a perfectly complementary combination. The humbuckers deliver warmth and sustain, while the Narrowfield gives the in-between positions a clear, Strat-like character without hum. Via the two coil split toggles, both humbuckers can be individually split into single-coil mode, further expanding the palette. The semi-hollow body adds a natural resonance and airiness that a solid guitar cannot match.

The mahogany body and set neck in a Pattern profile play fast and relaxed. The rosewood fretboard with 22 frets, 10" radius, 25" scale length, and Bird Inlays is familiar PRS quality. The PRS Patented Tremolo and Phase III Locking Tuners keep the tuning stable even with extensive tremolo use.
