The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird I Reissue: Ray Dietrich's Original Rebel Design Reborn

The Firebird isn't a guitar that asks for attention — it demands it. When Gibson introduced the Firebird in 1963, it was a departure from everything that had come before it: a neck-through-body construction, a reverse body designed by automotive stylist Ray Dietrich, and a sound as distinctive as its appearance. The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird I Reissue brings that original design back in all its minimalist glory, now with a rosewood fretboard and the quality you expect from the Custom line.

The Firebird I has always drawn its strength from what's not on it. No dual humbuckers, no elaborate electronics — just a Gibson USA Firebird mini-humbucker with Alnico 5 magnets that produces a characteristically bright, open sound with an attack somewhere between a single-coil and a full-sized humbucker. It's the sound that drew Johnny Winter, Keith Richards, and Eric Clapton to the Firebird, and it's as compelling as ever. The Lightning Bar Wraparound bridge provides excellent sustain and accurate intonation, while the CTS controls and the Black Beauty paper-in-oil capacitor keep the tone warm and detailed.

The 9-ply mahogany and walnut neck-through-body gives the Firebird I its typical resonance and sustain, flanked by solid mahogany wings that contribute to the warm, full character of the instrument. The rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets plays smoothly and comfortably, with subtle mother-of-pearl dot inlays completing the classic look. The Kluson planetary banjo tuners on the distinctive reverse headstock ensure stable tuning, while the GraphTech nut guides the strings smoothly. Each guitar comes with an Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom hardshell case.

The 1963 Firebird I Reissue in Cherry is for the guitarist who knows what they want: an instrument with character, history, and a sound that is instantly recognizable. Come and discover it.
