His 1962 Precision Bass was the instrument with which he laid the foundation for dozens of Motown hits and inspired a generation of bassists, from Paul McCartney to Geddy Lee. The custom-voiced James Jamerson '62 Split Single-Coil Precision Bass pickup delivers the warm, full tone so characteristic of the early P-Bass. The La Bella flatwound strings (.052-.110) are exactly the type Jamerson himself used and contribute directly to that distinctive, deep sound with plenty of sustain and minimal attack. The neck is made of maple with the James Jamerson 1962 "C" shape and an Heirloom Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish, just like the alder body. The slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage 7.25" radius, 20 vintage tall frets, and clay dot inlays. The scale length is 34" (864 mm). Hardware is completely era-correct: Pure Vintage 4-saddle bridge with threaded steel saddles, Pure Vintage Reverse Open-Gear tuners, and a 4-ply tortoiseshell pickguard.
