Strymon Olivera: The Warm, Organic Echo of an Oil Can Delay in a Modern Pedal

The Strymon Olivera brings back one of the most unique sounds in the history of guitar effects: the oil can echo. Developed in 1959 by Tel-Rey, the original worked with a rotating disc in a can of oil as a dielectric. The result was a dark, modulated echo sound that is completely different from tape or digital delay. Strymon has accurately recreated this mechanical character with a brand new algorithm, and the result is astonishingly authentic.

The sound of the Olivera is instantly recognizable: dark, undulating repeats with a unique rhythm and decay, thick modulation that moves with the audio signal, and an atmosphere that immediately transports you to another era. From subtle, atmospheric textures to floating, almost reverb-like sustain – the Olivera does things no other delay can. Ideal for blues, Americana, psychedelic rock, and anyone looking for a sound with character and soul.

The Olivera features a stereo Class A JFET input for optimal touch sensitivity, delay spillover so repeats continue to ring out when you bypass the pedal, MIDI support, and a USB connection for firmware updates. Control via expression pedal and Multiswitch is possible. The pedal is robustly built and ready for stage use. A unique tool for the guitarist who wants to look beyond the standard delay.
